Description : The problem: Statistics have shown that in Kampala alone, the per capita generation of garbage is 1kg of waste per day. With a total population of about 1.5 million people every day in Kampala, it’s estimated that we generate 1500 tonnes of solid waste daily and the city authority estimates the daily tonnage to increase to about 60 000 in the coming few years, KCCA can only manage to collect 40–50% of this because they lack enough garbage collection trucks.

The solution: Yo-Waste is a technology based startup in Uganda that helps communities and businesses become more sustainable through its range of technologies such as cloud and mobile based innovative systems that connects different waste management players across Africa.

State of development: Launched in 2018, Yo-Waste Started as research project from Makerere university in Kampala, and the startup is walking a rough but rewarding journey to change the way the waste management industry works in most of the African countries. Yo-Waste provides waste, recycling and smart city solutions to businesses and governments. It connects local waste haulers and recycling businesses to customers who need their services using a mobile app and website.

Funds Raised: Started and incubated as a research project from Makerere university in Kampala, Uganda.

Business Model: Yo-Waste works like an uber for wastes where one can instruct through an app to come and pick up the garbage from a specific home or work place at an affordable price.

Ambitions: Yo-Waste’s goal is to create sustainable and waste free communities in Uganda and later on in Africa at large through developing innovative technology solutions that allow people to recycle more and haulers to divert more collected trash to recycling industries. The startup plans to use the circular and shared economy principles to disrupt the waste management industry in Africa

Achievements: Yo-waste solutions such as the hauler app allows any one who owns a truck to sign up as a garbage collector and get access to our variety customers that need their services.

In the context of waste collection in Uganda: A lot of garbage collection companies in Kampala are all competing to sign up businesses and buildings and are scared to sign up homes as their customers because the organization of this market is way still disorganized. A garbage collection company can ably decide to send a truck to pick up trash from a business or building somewhere than it would decide if it was one person, which is totally understandable. The private waste haulers are interested in quantities, send a truck to a specific place and let it come back full. Yo-Waste, wants to transform the waste management industry to a point that even individual homes appreciate the work carried out by garbage collectors in Uganda.

Appreciation: Yo-Waste is helping small businesses in developing countries to recycle more and save on collection fees.
