Description : The problem : Public Transport in Lomé and in most west African cities is inefficient and unreliable, private transportation services are disorganized and unprofessional.
The solution : Co-Founded by Nigerian Emeka Ajene in November 2018, Gozem is an on- demand taxi (car) and moto taxis (zemidjans) application that is available in Togo and Benin. It operates through both Android and iOS. Like Uber, prices are fixed in advance per kilometer (72 FCFA per km around 0,10 cents) and passengers have access to the zemidjan location before and during the journey thanks to GPS and mapping services. They also have the possibility to order a zemidjan for someone else. 3 ways of payment are possible, Cash, Mobile money and credit card. Moreover, Gozem drivers are trained in road safety and are insured by Ogar Assurances and the emergency service Togo Assistance.
State of development : Only two months after its launch Gozem diversified its activities by adding cars to the services. In 2018 It had already completed more than 1,500 rides, on- boarded more than 100 drivers and had over 8,000 customers download its app and now 50 000 have downloaded it, but is planning almost immediate expansion. In January 2019 Gozem partnered with Total to raise awareness among drivers about eco driving , maintaining vehicle performance and strengthen relationship between drivers and Total.
Funds raised: US$900,000
Ambitions: Gozem ambition to develop its activity in Burkina Faso, Mali, Gabon, Cameroon and the rest of FCA zone and then Rwanda, Ghana and Nigeria. Gozem also plan to develop new verticals, such as food delivery and last mile delivery.
Within the context of Urban Transport in Africa : Only a few plateforms like Gozem exist in West Africa, usually more developed in North and East Africa, so it does not face a huge amount of competition within its target markets, and is banking on quick expansion in order to corner the market.
Appreciation: Gozem offers a trusted, efficient and fast solution to mobility in Lomé and the rest of Sub-Saharan which is highly welcomed by the population.
