Description : The problem : The lack of an affordable decent public commuting solution in Egypt is one of the main reason why Swvl was launched. In Egypt and in the world in general the amount of cars is too much and are wasting human and the environment limited resources: time, space and money.
The solution : Swvl was founded in 2017 by Ahmed Sabbah and Mahmoud Nouh. The startup connects commuters with private buses, and currently operates in Cairo Alexandria, Nairobi and Lahore (Pakistan). It is an app-based bus-hailing service. Swvl allows commuters to reserve seats on these buses and pay the fare through company’s mobile app. The buses available on Swvl operate on fixed routes (or lines) at a fixed price. The service is up to 70% cheaper than competing on-demand ride-hailing. Swvl does not own the buses or employs the drivers but has signed different partnerships to help drivers and operators with financing of the vehicles. The company has recently also partnered with Ford to have its operators use Ford Transit minibus as preferred vehicle of choice. In July 2019 Swvl has partnered with BRCK a Nairobi-based startup to launch free WiFi and online entertainment like music, Tv shows, cartoons and books on its buses in Kenya.
State of development : Since the launch, Swvl registered tens of thousands daily bookings in its different market. It is set to launch in Nigeria’s Lagos in July by first operating 50 buses.
Funds raised: $80 million raised so far (raised $42 millions in June)
Ambitions: Swvl plans to expand to 2 to 3 more cities in Africa and re-model public transportation in other emerging markets. It divulged plan to expand to Thailand, Vietnam and Uganda
Achievements: Swvl won « BT100 » award from Business Today magazine in Egypt
Within the context of Shared Mobility in Africa : Swvl solutions in Africa is not unique but was one of the first in the North region of Africa and is facing now competition from Karrem bus launched by Uber. Yet, its attractive price and services makes him a promising leader of the market in the region and in other region of the world.
Appreciation: A fast growing solutions such as Swvl is definitely to watch in a recent future as it expands not only in Africa but in emerging markets as well.
